Documents every overseas worker should prepare early

Most delays we see are not visa refusals. They are missing paperwork that could have been arranged weeks earlier, at home, for very little money.

When a departure slips, the reason is rarely dramatic. It is usually a passport with eight months of validity left, a police certificate issued by the wrong office, or a medical done at a centre the destination country does not recognise. Every one of those is avoidable.

Start with the passport

Most Gulf states want at least six months of validity remaining on the date of arrival, and several employers insist on longer so the residence permit can run its full term. If yours expires within a year, renew it before you begin applying rather than after you are selected.

Get the medical at an approved centre

A medical certificate from a clinic that is not on the destination country's approved list will be rejected, no matter how thorough it is. Ask your recruitment partner for the current list before you book — it changes, and an out-of-date list is as bad as none.

Police clearance takes longer than you expect

Character certificates are issued by the district police office and commonly take two to three weeks. Apply as soon as you decide to work abroad; the certificate stays valid long enough to be worth having in hand.

Keep certificates and their proof together

For every trade or technical certificate, keep the certificate itself, the institute's contact details, and any registration or roll number. Verification calls are routine now, and a certificate nobody can confirm will not be accepted.

Make copies before you travel

Scan everything and email it to yourself. If a document is lost in transit, a clear scan is usually enough to keep the process moving while a replacement is arranged.
